The company was founded on 30.12.1947 and on 31.01.1953 it became an entity with its own financial resources. A year later it started to operate as an independent institution. |

In May 1994 the Forestry Act divided forestry into public and business activities. In this process a part of the then GGP originated as economic enterprise, which received concession from government for performing forestry services in state - owned forests and on the other side a Slovenian Forest Service - Regional Unit Postojna came into being. The main duty of Slovenian Forest Service is to secure the public interest in the preservation of forests and all their functions. This part has a role of independent legal entity under the name Gozdno gospodarstvo Postojna and performs all the business activities.
Let us take a look at some data about managing state-owned forests today. The area of Regional Unit Postojna covers 107.365 ha, of which 76.564 ha is covered with forests. The area of state-owned forests is 32.301 ha or 68,7% of all forests in this area. What needs to be pointed out is that the process of denationalization is not yet finished, so that this number may change in the future.
